Celebrating one of the best years ever for animated cinema in Portugal, the 18th edition of ANIMAR proposes, from March 4, 2023, a programme centred on animated cinema, which includes an exhibition, guided tours and themed workshops at Solar - Galeria de Arte Cinemática, this year taking the films Os Demónios do Meu Avô, O Casaco Rosa, Garrano, Sopa Fria, Nayola and Slow Light as its starting point. ANIMAR's activities extend to film screenings at the Vila do Conde Municipal Theatre and Auditorium and in schools.
This year, taking as its starting point the films Os Demónios do Meu Avô, by Nuno Beato; O Casaco Rosa, by Mónica Santos, Garrano, by Vasco Sá and David Doutel; Sopa Fria, by Marta Monteiro; Nayola, by José Miguel Ribeiro; and Slow Light, by Katarzyna Kijek and Przemysław Adamski; ANIMAR 18 opens its doors to an exhibition that highlights and supports the dissemination of films that, as a whole, are already considered the best year ever for Portuguese animated cinema, whether in terms of their presence at festivals or awards won, or the historic Oscar nomination of a Portuguese animated short.
The exhibition includes various devices related to the production of the films, some more imaginative, constituting art installations and running parallel to the films, others of a more documentary nature, integrating various objects used in the production process, such as character studies, puppets, sets, props or costumes.
For schools, there are three film screenings aimed at pupils of various age groups - Best Of Portuguese Animation 2022 - for over 12s, New Portuguese Fiction, also for over 12s, and Cinemini On Tour, for over 3s - and a series of stop-motion, pixilation and optical toy workshops.
My Grandfather's Demons, in preview, and Nayola are the films being shown at the Vila do Conde Municipal Theatre, in the opening and closing sessions of ANIMAR, on 4 March and 4 June respectively.
The ANIMAR project, promoted by Solar - Galeria de Arte Cinemática and promoted by Animar - Serviço Educativo da Curtas Metragens CRL, proposes new tools, means and methodologies that introduce the principle of learning through a participatory experience. It is the result of an innovative proposal to raise awareness of art, decode images and mobilise transversal knowledge, stimulating the imagination through the principle of learning to play.
